The
Food Bank is a clearinghouse for donated retail food products,
surplus produce from growers, and USDA commodities . The food is gathered,
stored, and then distributed to more than 140 nonprofit agencies and
distribution sites from Nipomo to San Miguel. We provide food to more
than 25,000 people in the county. Many recipients are children
from families where a parent is working, but whose income is not sufficient
to make ends meet.
The Food Bank staff and volunteers distribute food to hungry people
through the member nonprofit agencies. This food is a wide variety
of fresh, frozen, canned and packaged goods. The food is obtained
from food drives, local growers, local food packagers, trading with
other food banks and salvaged food from grocery stores. We are also a Secondary Distribution
Organization (SDO) in the Second Harvest Food Bank network.
