KSBY News: Free summer meals for kids at SLO County Public Libraries July 03, 2017

San Luis Obispo Public Libraries are making efforts to get more involved in the community by feeding hungry children. According to the Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo more than 16,000 kids in San Luis Obispo County go hungry during the summer while school is out. San Luis Obispo Public Libraries has teamed up with the food bank to serve kids free breakfast and lunch at various locations and for it's new "Picnic in the Park" program. San Luis Obispo Library will be serving breakfast. The Morro Bay Library will serve lunch. Nipomo Library will serve lunch and an afternoon snack. Three San Luis Obispo County libraries are serving up free lunches and snacks for kids over the next month. Children up to age 18 are welcome to the meals - with no ID, income verification or payment required. Margaret Kensinger-Kopfler coordinates system-wide youth programs for San Luis Obispo County Libraries. She said the new “Summer Lunch” program is up and running at three of the county libraries - Morro Bay, Nipomo and San Luis Obispo. “It came about actually because I went to a conference and they were talking about how libraries were supporting their communities in non-traditional ways,” Kensinger-Kopfler said. “And there was a grant from the federal government to have libraries consider whether they would be summer lunch sites.” The libraries partnered with the Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County. view full story»

Paso Robles Daily News: Local hospitals donate over 1,000 boxes of cereal to feed kids this summer June 23, 2017

Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center and Twin Cities Community Hospital just completed a community-wide effort to provide local families with a healthy breakfast during the summer months through its Healthy Over Hungry Cereal Drive benefitting The Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County. The drive kicked off Friday, June 2 and ran through Friday, June 9. Together, employees from both hospitals donated 1,190 servings of cereal and $3,111 to help feed local children who may be struggling with hunger during their summer break. That money will be matched by Tenet Healthcare. There are 44,000 San Luis Obispo County residents who struggle with hunger, 40% of whom are children. Nationally, Tenet employees contributed 3.2 million servings of cereal and more than $209,000, which will be supplemented by a $100,000 matching grant from Tenet. Total participation included 113 Tenet hospitals, offices and facilities, 89 Tenet-affiliated centers and offices and eight non-Tenet hospitals and companies. All of the cereal collected by both Sierra Vista and Twin Cities was donated to the Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County, along with the more than $3,000 in monetary donations. The Food Bank is able to provide $10 of food for every dollar collected. As the school year comes to an end, so do the free breakfast and lunch programs relied upon by many San Luis Obispo County children and teens. To bridge the gap until the next school year and ensure children have access to nutritious food year-round, the Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County will provide more than 40,000 meals through its Hunger-Free Summer Program at sites across San Luis Obispo County. “Summer can be an especially hard time for families who are already struggling to make ends meet,” said SLO County Food Bank CEO, Kevin Drabinski. “Thanks to this program, we’re able to provide kids with access to healthy food all summer long, so that they can return to school healthy and ready to learn in the fall.” SLO County Food Bank summer meals are held at libraries, schools, recreation centers, and other agencies with strong ties to the community. In San Luis Obispo County more than 46,000 residents are food insecure, meaning they are unable to consistently access or afford adequate food. That means that 1 in 6 people face hunger. Of these at least 40% are children, and 20% are seniors. The Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County believes everyone has the right to nutritious food, regardless of the reason why they can’t always obtain food for themselves and makes it their mission to see that no one in SLO county goes hungry. KSBY News: SLO Food Bank raises $65,000 during Hunger Awareness Day June 02, 2017

The Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County collected $65,000 Friday during Hunger Awareness Day. According to the Food Bank, one in six SLO County residents lack consistent access to nutritious food. "Hunger does some of its best work quietly and invisibly in the community,” SLO County Food Bank CEO Kevin Drabinski. “So the hopelessness that it's engendering doesn't take out the full-page ad, the despair doesn't express itself in 140 characters or less so we really needed to bang the drum every once in a while and say 'here we are, these are the needs and this is your opportunity to be able to step up and help us.'" People could donate in person at 28 sites across the county. In downtown San Luis Obispo, the National Corvette Restorers Society donated $500, Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center donated $2,500, and Rabobank donated $10,000. The Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County and must! charities established the Children’s Food Program in June 2013. Must! invested $220,000 that built the foundation for this program. These funds were used to hire staff, fund community outreach programs and train volunteers, all of which helped the Coalition’s Children’s Program to become completely sustainable in 2015. Once the infrastructure was in place, the Food Bank Coalition was able to reach another milestone in 2016 by providing 200,000 meals during the summer months to kids who might otherwise go hungry. What started as a goal of feeding the 6,000 children of need in north San Luis Obispo County became a county-wide program that now serves over 16,000 students. view full story»
