SLO Food Bank
Coalition of San Luis Obispo County
Senior Brown Bag
Even though I worked almost all my life, my Social Security doesn't
cover the cost of rent, insurance, gas and medicine, let alone food.
If it weren't for the Food Bank, I would run out of food before the
end of every month.
These are some of the comments we hear from people who come to the Food Bank's Senior Brown Bag Program twice each month. In San Luis Obispo County, where the cost of living is high, it's not uncommon for a senior on a fixed income to be less and less able to make it here as the years pass.
As one senior recently noted, food is about the only monthly expense that can vary. You can't tell your landlord or utility company that you'll only pay part of the bill. But you can scrimp on food, and that's what many are forced to do.
To qualify for the Brown Bag Program at any of a dozen sites in our area, SLO County seniors need to be living independently and earn:
- $1215 or less per month for an individual
- $2257 or less per month for a couple
You'll need to apply at the site you wish to attend and bring proof of income in the form of a Social Security check or retirement fund distribution. Bring a copy you can leave with the site manager. That's all there is to it.
