Appearance: Root vegetable that is cream-colored on its bottom half and purple on its top

Availability: September through June

Look for: Firm, no nicks or cuts; greens on the top should appear brightly colored and fresh.

How to Prepare: Rinse and cut off top and bottom and then peel outer skin. Turnips can be eaten raw or baked and roasted, like a potato.  

How to Store: Store in the refrigerator for a few days as they get bitter with time.  

Fun Fact: Before pumpkins were carved on Halloween, people carved Turnips!
